Ballet Hispanico pays tribute to the richness of its Latino roots—and the diverse talents of the company’s dancers—with a Joyce season that features African and Caribbean influences. Highlights include the world premiere of Espiritu Vivo, created especially for Ballet Hispanico by Ronald K. Brown and set to live music by Afro-Peruvian Latin Grammy winner Susana Baca; and the Joyce premiere of Asuka, Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro’s first work for the company, an exuberant homage to salsa legend Celia Cruz. A trio of alternately edgy and theatrical works from Annabelle Lopez Ochoa—including the New York premiere of Nube Blanco—captures the emotional range of the company, while the program sees a revival of Pedro Ruiz’s Guajira and the return of repertory gem Tito on Tim ... One of Australia’s most innovative and acclaimed theatre companies is travelling to New York’s New Victory Theater this April. Belvoir will perform The Book of Everything by Guus Kuijer in a space that is known to be one of the most prestigious venues for children’s work in the world.
The performance takes audience members on a journey with nine-year-old Tomas Klopper. Thomas has one simple but important wish, When I grow up, I’m going to be happy. On his journey he sees extraordinary things that most people ignore: plagues of hopping frogs, summer hailstorms and rivers bursting with tropical fish. The story tells us about a child who learns to act when beset by fear and faced by wrong as Tom grapples with issues such as religious views and domestic violence.
The piece is suitable for 9 ye ...

Stick Fly follows the LeVays, an affluent African-American family who come together to spend a summer weekend at their Martha’s Vineyard home. The adult sons, aspiring novelist Kent and golden boy plastic surgeon Flip, have each brought their respective ladies (one black and one white) to meet the parents. Food, drink and Trivial Pursuit tangle with class, race and identity politics in this contemporary comedy of manners.

The Immediate Family’s adaptation of Perceval will run three nights in May at Foster Hall, Cephas Center for the Arts.
The play resurrects the classic Arthurian legend of an unassuming boy who undertakes the noblest adventure of all: the Quest for the Holy Grail. Spanning centuries of sources from Medieval literature to the modern cinema, a small but resourceful cast will bring to life a world of duels and damsels, curses and spells, despicable fiends, bleeding spears, floating castles, and maybe even the Cup itself. Several scenes will include delightful French dialogue inspired by Eric Rohmer’s cinematic version.

The Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, one of China’s most renowned theater companies, is known for their extraordinary craftsmanship. Kunqu artists combine acting, movement, singing and live music in a total theatrical immersion. One of the oldest and most influential forms of Chinese opera, the troupe brings 20 performers to New York for three special performances.
The Lanke Mountain is a tale of greed, ambition, betrayal and humor; a story which harkens back to a historical past while connecting to contemporary times. The story followings the heroine Cui, who divorces and then attempts to return to her husband. It is acted with total abandon, rarely seen in Kunqu performances which are generally marked by subtlety and restraint.
This program is made possible, in part, by generous suppor ...
