Inspired by a mythological history, Holi is the Indian festival of Colors that welcomes spring by people throwing colored powder and water on one another. Attended by as many as 600 South Asian young and mid-career professionals in the past, this fifth year of vibrant Holi celebrations is being held on the Princess ship for a cruise along the Hudson river. Organized by IN Group Events, “Rang Barse” on the Princess will set sail on March 17 from 12:30 to 3:30 pm to paint the town red, green and blue. Revel in Indian festivities complete with food, drinks, heaps of powdered color and foot-tapping Indian music. A famous Indian DJ, traditional Indian drums (dhol) and a spectacular Bollywood dance performance guarantee a great time for all Indian culture lovers.

This talk will explore adaptations of Shakespeare in popular Hindi cinema, a.k.a. Bollywood. Through clips from films as varied as Shakespeare Wallah, Angoor, and Omkara, Gitanjali Shahani will explore the colonial contexts of Shakespearean production and the post-colonial contexts of Shakespearean reproduction in India. Shahani is Assistant Professor of English at San Francisco State University where she teaches courses on Shakespearean and non-Shakespearean drama as well as contemporary South Asian literatures.
