Chronicles of a Paradise Lost: Filming Absence (Lebanese Cinema 1965-2010)
This tour follows two critically acclaimed programs curated by ArteEast; The Calm After The Storm: Making Sense of Lebanon’s Civil War in association with Film Society of Lincoln Center, and the French Institute’s (Alliance Française) World Nomads: Lebanon program.
Lebanese cinema is relatively young in comparison with that of neighboring Egypt or Syria. Lebanon’s fifteen-year history of civil war, which ravaged the country through 1991, stifled efforts to develop infrastructure for a viable film industry. However, the trauma of war also gave rise to a radical engagement with film: documentary and nonfiction genres proliferated and filmmakers were inspired to forge a subjective voice through a daring au ... It’s fresh, it’s young, it’s non-conventional, it’s culture… It’s Spanish Urban Culture! The keenest vision of life on the streets can always be found behind the lens, the paint can, the laptop, and the eyes of a city’s youth.
New Urban Cultures from Spain showcases the young urban experience of today in the form of four feature films, a series of short selections, and a special focus on the music video. After all, we can’t discuss urban culture in Spain and not include music, which is pervasive in our cities’ streets, bars, discos, and concert venues.
So, in addition to our film program, we’ve selected some of Spain’s best musicians from the popular pantheon, ranging from the best-respected indie bands on the scene to El Guincho’s tropicalia and Tote King’s hip hop. But PRAGDA’s cul ...
Yeonghwa is the Korean word for film, and since South Korean cinema now features prominently in every major international film festival, it is a good word for cineastes to know. Korean film tends to blend technical excellence with idiosyncratic expression and an entrepreneurial spirit—filmmakers often write and direct their work, and both actors and filmmakers benefit from the country’s homegrown “star system”—while embracing a wide variety of styles and subjects. Korean cinema is generally made for a national audience, so its vision is rarely diminished by compromises in the name of global appeal. This second edition of Yeonghwa includes nine new feature films, including Yim Soon-rye’s Rolling Home with a Bull, along with a program of award-winning short films by major directors; a two-fi ...

In the summer of 2003, members of the Filipino American Network (FAN) envisioned a unique event that would celebrate the work of Filipino and Filipino American filmmakers. Our mission was two-fold. Primarily, it was to support and highlight Filipino filmmakers in the U.S., Canada and the Philippines. But in keeping with FAN’s vision of service to our local community, we also intended for the Festival to educate and enrich our Filipino American community.
Since its founding, the Chicago Filipino American Film Festival has provided thousands of Chicago’s Filipino Americans, and a growing number of our non-Filipino neighbors, with an opportunity to witness the growth of dozens of Filipino American filmmakers and performers, and experience the rich and colorful cinema of the Philippines. ...
