These galleries explore the South Asian emergence of Buddhist and Hindu sculptural traditions between the second century B.C. and the eighth century A.D. More than one hundred sixty works from the permanent collection are juxtaposed to trace the range of stylistic and iconographic developments in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India during a period that witnessed great ideological ferment and international exchange. The recently published volume The Art of Gandhara in The Metropolitan Museum of Art addresses much of this early production.

This display of human-form sculptures in the Museum’s Fireside Gallery features approximately fourteen works by Naum Mogilevsky. The sculptures were recently added to the Museum’s growing permanent collection through a generous gift from the artist’s nephew, Boris Mogilevsky. Sculptor Naum Mogilevsky (1895-1975) was a prominent member of the celebrated 1920s avant-garde artist group in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) known as the Krug Khudozhnikov (Circle of Artists). A close friend of the famous avant-gardist Vladimir Tatlin and a pupil of the outstanding sculptor Alexander Matveev, Mogilevsky created works of lasting beauty that did not conform to the parameters of state-endorsed Socialist Realism. Mogilevsky’s preferred medium was wood, and later in his career, stone. The objects included in ...
Showcasing the spectacular craftsmanship and sophisticated design associated with both Japan and Art Deco style, this exhibition is the first in the U.S. to explore a little-known brand of pre-WWII modernism borne of competitive ingenuity and vivacious cosmopolitanism. Curated by Dr. Kendall Brown, Deco Japan: Shaping Art and Culture, 1920–1945 subtly conveys the complex social and cultural tensions in Japan during the Taisho and early Showa periods through dramatically designed examples of metalwork, ceramics, lacquer, glass, furniture, jewelry, sculpture and evocative ephemera such as sheet music, posters, postcards, prints and photography. The vitality of the era is further expressed through the theme of the moga(“modern girl”)–an emblem of contemporary urban chic that ...
