Now in its 22nd year, the AFI Latin American Film Festival showcases the best filmmaking from Latin America and, with the inclusion of films from Spain and Portugal, celebrates Ibero-American cultural connections.
Highlights of the festival include the Opening Night selection, The Mexican Suitcase, Chevolution director Trisha Ziff’s latest documentary about a treasure trove of photographs from the Spanish Civil War recently discovered in Mexico City; Medianeras, Gustavo Taretto’s quirky crowd-pleaser about two lonely people finding each other in Buenos Aires; Chilean auteur Raul Ruiz’s lush, labyrinthine epicMysteries of Lisbon, presented in a weeklong run within the festival;Bonsai, the latest film from Chilean director Cristian Jimenez (Optical Illusions), which recentl ... The second in a series of installations that focus, one at a time, on masterworks of Hebrew manuscript illumination from a national or international collection. The display highlights Jewish artistic culture in the Middle Ages by presenting it alongside contemporary works of art, mostly created for Christians, from the Museum’s own collection. This installment features the Cervera Bible, a designated National Treasure from the National Library of Portugal in Lisbon. The pages of this Hebrew Bible, one of the most splendid manuscripts of the Middle Ages, will be turned weekly, giving viewers the rare opportunity to see many of its beautiful illustrations.

With his earthy and atmospheric songs, new fado sensation Antonio Zambujo treats us to a night of nostalgia and romance Portuguese-style. Winner of the Amália Rodrigues Foundation prize for Best Fado Male Singer, he merges traditional fado with cante alentejano (male chant form southern Portugal with North African influences) and Brazilian popular music.
