On Friday, September 16th, The Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts and the Happy Valley Cultural Center, in association with The Ojai Foundation, will present Drums and Dance of India, featuring the tabla ensemble Talavya (formerly Tabla Ecstasy) and Kathak dancer Jin (JoungJin) Won, at the Zalk Theater.
Tabla comes center stage in the hands of the young, highly trained players of Talavya, a quartet that revels in the tabla’s hidden potency as a rhythmic and melodic instrument capable of expressing just about anything. The ensemble, formerly known as Tabla Ecstasy, distills the age-old spirit and practice of tabla into a high-energy, highly accessible evening that reveals the instrument’s true joys.

Rangoli is a decorative design made on the floor to signify sacred, welcoming areas for Hindu deities. Using found and recycled materials, children and their families will create this beautiful, traditional decorative folk art of India. Kimberly Carmody, founder of Urban River Arts, will facilitate the creation and dismantling of this interactive rangoli. Dismantling ceremony at 3:45.

Our story takes place in the court (darbar) of the great patron king of Kathak, Wajid Ali Shah, who represents the decadence of courtly life. The king is so distracted by his indulgences that he does not notice that his general is being tempted by the British to betray him. Pandit Das’ new work brings to life the rich artistic and cultural legacy of the courts of North India exploring themes of power and corruption.
Kathak is the only Indian classical dance style with both Muslim and Hindu influences, as it was adpoted by the Mughals. Das has a direct lineage to the North Indian courts of yesteryear; his Guru taught the last remaining courtesans of the modern era.
