Historic Japanese Baptist Church will hold its annual Sukiyaki Dinner on Saturday, April 30th. Take out (including curbside service) from 2:00 PM to 7:00PM. Dine in service from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Come and peruse the bake and craft sale tables along with an ikebana display. Just before 7:00 PM, you will hear the thunder of NW Taiko to start the free Cultural Program which will feature dancing by the Seattle Japanese Community Queen’s Court, Japanese folk songs, children’s songs by Megumi Kindergarten, and performances on the koto, shamisen and shakuhachi. Ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement, is both an ancient and modern art. In basic form, an ikebana arrangement follows a fixed pattern: a triangle of three points representing heaven, earth, and man. Emphasis is placed on linear perfection, color harmony, space, and form. An ikebana usually contains the foliage and flowers of the current season, and all are used in their natural state except for the deft “cut” of the arranger’s clippers which perfects the line of a branch or the shape of a bud. What distinguishes ikebana from other approaches to flower arrangement are its use of asymmetry and “empty” space as essential features of the composition. JAA (Japanese American Association) 15 W. 44th Street, 11th fl. NYC Young Yum and Young Lee Oh of the Ohara school will demonstrate how to prepare a Japanese Ikebana flower arrangement in the style of the Ohara School at JAA (Japanese American Association on Wed. Dec. 5. They have exhibited numerous times at the Philadelphia Flower show, Longwood Garden and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Homemade bento box lunch will be served.
