It’s fresh, it’s young, it’s non-conventional, it’s culture… It’s Spanish Urban Culture! The keenest vision of life on the streets can always be found behind the lens, the paint can, the laptop, and the eyes of a city’s youth.
New Urban Cultures from Spain showcases the young urban experience of today in the form of four feature films, a series of short selections, and a special focus on the music video. After all, we can’t discuss urban culture in Spain and not include music, which is pervasive in our cities’ streets, bars, discos, and concert venues.
So, in addition to our film program, we’ve selected some of Spain’s best musicians from the popular pantheon, ranging from the best-respected indie bands on the scene to El Guincho’s tropicalia and Tote King’s hip hop. But PRAGDA’s cul ... Go to event

Europe is in the midst of a crime wave—a surge of creative and innovative detective fiction that pays its respects to the traditions of noir while incorporating the psychological novel, the political thriller, and the border-crossings that reflect the increasingly globalized culture of the EU. The eighth annual New Literature from Europe Festival organized by eight European Cultural Institutes in New York, will present a series of readings and discussions in Manhattan and Brooklyn from November 15-17, 2011, with writers Caryl Férey (France), Zygmunt Miłoszewski(Poland), Ana Maria Sandu (Romania), Stefan Slupetzky (Austria), José Carlos Somoza (Spain), and Jan Costin Wagner (Germany), joined by U.S. guest author Dan Fesperman.

This series of documentaries, featuring films made from the 1970s to the present, focuses on the most intimate acts by filmmakers and documentary subjects as they probe into extremely private experiences concerning family, birth, death, loss, and heartbreak. Pushing the genre and subjects into uncharted territories, these films address various issues fundamental to documentary filmmaking: privacy, authority, authenticity, and responsibility. They also offer penetrating contemplations on Japanese society and individual lives.
