The DocMiami International Film Festival is a celebration of documentary filmmaking at a global level. The festival showcases cutting edge documentary films during the day, and puts on outstanding music concerts in the evenings.

This uniquely American event began as a promotional effort by Pasadena’s distinguished Valley Hunt Club. In the winter of 1890, the club members brainstormed ways to promote the “Mediterranean of the West.” They invited their former East Coast neighbors to a mid-winter holiday, where they could watch games such as chariot races, jousting, foot races, polo and tug-of-war under the warm California sun. The abundance of fresh flowers, even in the midst of winter, prompted the club to add another showcase for Pasadena’s charm: a parade would precede the competition, where entrants would decorate their carriages with hundreds of blooms. This traditional holiday represents the day the three kings arrive at the nativity with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh for the baby Jesus.
Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar are depicted in a colorful procession commemorating the journey following the star to Bethlehem.
In Mexico and other Latin countries many children receive their Christmas gift on this day. We on Olvera street celebrate this tradition with prizes,free champurado (Mexican traditional chocolate drink) and pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread) as well as a Piñata filled with candies for the children to break and enjoy.

State Representative Dawnna Dukes and Women In Jazz invite you to attend the 14th Annual African American Community Heritage Festival (AACHF), on Saturday, February 23, 2013. Last year’s festivities were highly successful with over 60 vendors, nearly 3,000 in attendance and fundraising efforts that granted $20,000.00 to the Huston-Tillotson University Scholarship Fund!
