Starting June 18, 2011, the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture will host a series of programs–exhibits, film viewings, lectures, book presentations, and deportation survivor reminiscences–commemorating 70 years since the start of mass deportations of Lithuanians to the Gulag – the vast network of concentration camps and prisons in Siberia and other remote regions of the Soviet Union.

“A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs” is a traveling exhibit about the contributions of iconic Jewish songwriters such as Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein to the great “American Songbook” during the period 1910-1965. It opens at the Orland Park Public Library on Wednesday, July 13. The best songwriters of this time combined a genius for melody, a talent for pairing it with the perfect words, and an ability to connect with a wide audience. A high percentage of them were Jewish, from families that had immigrated to America in the 1800s or fled pogroms and persecution in Europe at the turn of the century. Their sophisticated and romantic songs—“Body and Soul,” “Over the Rainbow,” “That Old Black Magic,” “It Had to Be You”—became beloved classics ...
Pelham Bay Park will host four hours of performances, exhibits, arts and crafts, delicious food, storytelling, nature programs, and more. This annual event is a celebration of the unique Native cultures of the Americas. Guest of all ages will enjoy the ability to interact with many of the performances and activities, while learning about the traditions and lifestyles of such Native groups such as the Taino, Blackfoot, Narrangansett, and more.
