Black champagne and the smells of Mars, tasteless candy and recorded silence, Lori Gréaud’s art is equal parts science experiment and cyberpunk carnival ride. On Saturday, Greaud will bring his heady thrills to New York with “The Unplayed Notes” at the Pace Gallery, his first major US show.
The 32-year-old artist shot to international prominence in recent years with shows in London, Tokyo and Paris, including a 2008 exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo that was the first solo show to use the venue’s entire 40,000 square foot space. Gréaud’s works are ambitious and complex, often created in collaboration with engineers, scientists, and other specialists, with the artist playing a role more often associated with a film director. The results are immersive experiences that throw the viewer into a ...
The first exhibition in the United States at the Art Institute of Chicago devoted to French artist Cahun’s work, Entre Nous: The Art of Claude Cahun brings together over 80 photographs and published material by Cahun and her partner Moore.
Born Lucy Schwob to a family of French Jewish intellectuals and writers, Claude Cahun (who adopted the pseudonym at age 22) is best known for the staged self-portraiture, photomontages, and prose texts she made principally between 1920 and 1940. Rediscovered in the late 1980s, her work has not only expanded our understanding of the Surrealist era but also serves as a towering precursor to feminist explorations of gender and identity politics. In her self-portraits, which she began creating around 1913, Cahun dismantled and questioned preexisting notions ...

A Window on Nature: Art of Asuka Hishiki includes over 35 watercolors illustrating a poetic and detailed observation of plants and insects. Hishiki’s portraits of vegetables from New York City’s celebrated Greenmarkets and her imaginative plant-like insects from her Association of Type B metamorphosis Entomologists (ATBE) series are influenced by a childhood reference book of insects, plants and animals, as well as her fascination with the work of 18th century naturalist and scientific illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian. Offering a visually nourishing treat, Hishiki faithfully captures crisp, ripe colors of locally grown vegetables and brilliantly patterned caterpillars sprout mushrooms on their backs.
