Once essential to the New Year celebration, the practice of mochitsuki is now rare even in Japan, as busy people eat store-bought mochi rather than make their own. Come and celebrate the Japanese New Year with the music and dance of Kagami Kai, a San Francisco-based group dedicated to maintaining the Japanese tradition of mochi pounding. Pound your own mochi, and decorate and write a New Year greeting to friends or family.
There are plenty of ways to spend time with family and friends, but have you ever made mochi together? Come on down to the museum for our novel festivity: mochitsuki, or mochi pounding, in which steamed glutinous rice is transformed into delectable soft, chewy cakes.

Lebanese Master Marcel Khalifé will perform the prophetic poems of the Arab World’s most renowned and beloved poet Mahmoud Darwish, and pays tribute to the Arab Spring.
Marcel Khalifé, Lebanese composer, singer and master of the oud (Arabic lute), evokes this world, honoring the spirit of his late friend and associate Mahmoud Darwish, who passed away in Houston, TX on August 8, 2008. Darwish is a strikingly original Palestinian poet born in Palestine whose poetry has been translated to more than 25 languages worldwide and extensively published in the US. Korean Traditional Music and Dance Institute celebrates its 25th anniversary. Ms. Yoon Sook Park, president of Korean Traditional Music and Dance Institute of NY will perform at the anniversary performance including melodies of acoustic kayagum San Jo and a fusion of traditional and contemporary music and dance.

The DC Caribbean Carnival will be combined with Baltimore’s celebration. On Saturday July 14, 2012, the Parade starts at Noon at 900 E 33rd Street, travels along Alameda Street to St. Lo Drive. The Festival continues at Lake Clifton Park until 10:00 pm; $10 entrance fee. On Sunday July 15, 2012 the Festival continues from Noon to 9:00 pm featuring entertainment, food and crafts. Admission: $15.00 per person.

The Largest free folk festival in the nation, with continuous music on six outdoor stages, takes place July 27-29, 2012 in downtown Lowell, Massachusetts. A partial lineup of performers, representing folk, bluegrass, gospel, world music, dance and more, appears below. The festival takes place on six different stages in historic downtown Lowell. A family friendly event, the Lowell Folk Festival has presented an international array of folk music, ethnic foods, craftspeople and artisans, as well as kid’s activities to enthusiastic New England audiences every summer for over 25 years.
