This half day program examines book structure and calligraphy and includes a demonstration of the art of Islamic calligraphy by Mohamed Zakariya, the foremost practitioner of Islamic calligraphy in the United States and a specialist in Ottoman, North African, and Andalusian calligraphy. Presented in conjunction with Islamic and Indian Arts of the Book: Conservation & Context, a professional development workshop for conservators that will focus on the long term preservation and exhibition of the arts of the book from both the Islamic and South Asian traditions.

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan (Wild Cursive, 2007 Next Wave) returns to BAM with Water Stains on the Wall, a metaphorically rich continuation of artistic director Lin Hwai-min’s choreographic exploration of the beauty and aesthetics of calligraphy. Projections of continuously shifting cloud shapes—reminiscent of flowing ink—transform a tilted white platform into a giant sheet of rice paper. All movement is at once filigreed and rooted, reflecting the virtuosity of chi kung, internal martial arts, modern dance, and meditation. The dancers seem to hover as they jump and spin, embodying the calligraphic potential of clouds, slithering snakes, and water stains on the wall.

Critics have raved about the virtuosity of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan’s dancers, claiming they “possess a control and articulation that verge on the superhuman” (Chicago Sun-Times). Trained in chi kung, meditation, internal martial arts, Chinese opera, modern dance and ballet, the company performs a rich repertoire with roots in Asian myths, folklore and aesthetics, infused with a contemporary perspective.

Celebrate Japan’s New Year’s holiday with lion dancing (shishi-mai) accompanied by live taiko drumming and Gagaku court music. There will be lots of traditional New Year’s activities for children, including special New Year’s calligraphy (kakizome), kite-making/flying (takoage), fukuwarai (funny face) game, taiko drumming, and rice pounding (mochi-tsuki).

Meet acclaimed Korean designer Lie Sang Bong, whose worldwide clientele for avant-garde clothing includes celebrities like Lady Gaga and Beyonce. He will discuss a career that spans more than two decades, in which he has combined a keen fashion sense, an artist’s vision, and inspiration from his Korean roots. Using a multi-media presentation, Lie will illustrate the many influences of Korean culture—including traditional paintings, calligraphy, and architecture—in his designs.
