On Monday, Sept. 12 from 7 to 9 p.m., at the powerHouse Arena, 137 Main St., Hisham Matar will read and discuss Anatomy of a Disappearance, his hotly anticipated follow-up to In the Country of Men, with novelist Hari Kunzru (My Revolutions).
A haunting portrait of a young man struggling with the strange and sudden absence of his father, Hisham Matar’s Anatomy of a Disappearance moves brilliantly through time, and slowly unfolds as an intricate mystery. Nuri el-Alfi’s father, Kamal, vanishes in Geneva in 1972, but his family is already familiar with dislocation as they had been exiled from an Arab country where Kamal was advisor to the king.
Fourteen year-old Nuri begins a desperate search, one that propels him toward the truths of his father’s elusive life and the treache ... 
The Good Muslim, from prize-winning Bangladeshi novelist Tahmima Anam, is the second novel in her planned “Bengal Trilogy.” It tells the story of the tragic aftermath of the Bangladesh war of Independence, 40 years ago this year, and the ways in which it molds the lives of her two main characters, siblings, Maya and Sohail Haque.

Author and Yale University professor Timothy Snyder will discuss his acclaimed book Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin in which he links the Ukrainian famine, the Holocaust, Stalin’s mass executions, the planned starvation of Soviet POWs, and postwar ethnic cleansing. Columnist Anne Applebaum who has written extensively on the Soviet Gulags, observes: “Instead of studying Nazi atrocities or Soviet atrocities separately, as many others have done, he [Snyder] looks at them together. Yet Snyder does not exactly compare the two systems either. His intention, rather, is to show that the two systems committed the same kinds of crimes at the same times and in the same places, that they aided and abetted one another, and above all that their interaction with one another led to more mass ... 
Liao Yiwu, poet, novelist, musician and documentarian, is one of the most outspoken writers in China today. Dubbed as the “Studs Terkel of China,” Liao is the author of The Corpse Walker, Real Life Stories: China From the Bottom Up, a stunning series of portraits of individuals ignored in history books and unacknowledged in the accounts of hte new China.
