Chinese-American pianist Dave Liang returns to the Asia Society with The Shanghai Restoration Project, a group renowned for its unique blend of Chinese instrumentation, hip-hop and electronica. The group draws its inspiration from the 1930s jazz clubs of Shanghai, and the performance features vocalist Zhang Le singing in this distinctive style. Joining the two onstage will be the electronic musician Jamahl Richardson.
The evening will also feature a multimedia presentation from Sean Leow of NeochaEDGE, a Shanghai-based creative agency, introducing the audience to the emerging Chinese creative community. Recently retired from a company after some 40 years of service, Sunada Tomoaki, father of filmmaker Sunada Mami, is diagnosed with terminal cancer and only has a few months left to live. True to his pragmatic core, Sunada sets out to accomplish a list of tasks before his final departure: playing with his grandchildren, planning his own funeral, saying “I love you” to his wife, among others. This series of documentaries, featuring films made from the 1970s to the present, focuses on the most intimate acts by filmmakers and documentary subjects as they probe into extremely private experiences concerning family, birth, death, loss, and heartbreak. Pushing the genre and subjects into uncharted territories, these films address various issues fundamental to documentary filmmaking: privacy, authority, authenticity, and responsibility. They also offer penetrating contemplations on Japanese society and individual lives.

With a 22-year history, Asia Society Texas Center’s annual gala draws patrons, business and cultural leaders, and diplomats. The general public is invited to tour the Asia Society Texas Center’s new building on Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15 when the Center hosts a free Open House and First Look Festival. Food, performances, and kids’ activities will be part of the fun along with tours of the Center, which features the 273-seat Brown Foundation Performing Arts Theater, 4,000-square-foot Louisa Stude Sarofim Gallery, 3,000-square-foot Edward Rudge Allen III Education Center, and Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall.
The festival marks the opening of Treasures of Asian Art: A Rockefeller Legacy, a not-to-be-missed exhibition of over 60 masterpieces from the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller Collection housed at the Asia Society Museum in New York. The exhibition continues through September 16.
