Annapolis, Maryland—The Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival will take place on Saturday, September 24, 2011, 10 AM to 7 PM at the Annapolis City Dock, in Annapolis, Maryland. The Festival’s location is significant and appropriate because it was the actual location of Kunta Kinte’s arrival to America. The site is now memorialized with a statue of historian and author Alex Haley, a descendant of Kunta Kinte.
Over the years the Festival has grown and it continues to be a historical occasion for African Americans and people from all walks of life to come together. Let’s drum together! Suki will lead us in Afro Cuban and Congolese Styles, including tumbao, and rumba. We’ll also work on improving individual technique. “Suki knows how to play and she knows how to teach! And she’s one of the most approachable, easy-going people you’d want to meet.” Suki has been playing drums for 35 years. She has studied with many master drummers from the Congo, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Trinidad and has played with many excellent bands.

Ya Maka My Weekend starts Friday, August 10, 2012 at 5 p.m. and Saturday, August 11, 2012 at noon. Ya Maka My Weekend is a signature festival for The District that was born in 1992. Reggae bands, steel drums, and beach music fill the streets. This arts & cultural event also features Caribbean-style food, an open air marketplace, island activities for kids, and a sand beach.
