Starting June 18, 2011, the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture will host a series of programs–exhibits, film viewings, lectures, book presentations, and deportation survivor reminiscences–commemorating 70 years since the start of mass deportations of Lithuanians to the Gulag – the vast network of concentration camps and prisons in Siberia and other remote regions of the Soviet Union.

The Way Back (2010) is director Peter Weir’s film about Siberian Gulag escapees who walk 4,000 miles overland to freedom in India. Film screening and discussion in English.

A photo exhibition Lithuania in Exile, 1988-1989 by photographer, film director, cameraman and traveller Juozas Kazlauskaswill complete the exhibition offerings. Kazlauskas has been featured in several dozen one-man and group exhibitions in Lithuania, Bulgaria, France, Mexico, USA, Germany, Yugoslavia, Georgia, and Russia. On a historic and geographic level, this cycle of photographs is archivally significant as it documents the remains of Siberian barracks that have now vanished from the contemporary landscape. On an aesthetic level, the photographs consider the relationship between man, history and nature through the subtle play of light and dark in the images, asking the viewer to consider what cannot be seen as much as what can. Csaba Toth Bagi (Serbia/Hungary)
Guitarist and singer Csaba Toth Bagi has been a fixture of the Hungarian music scene since his teenage years, well known for his powerful voice and his soulful and technically brilliant guitar playing. His rootsy blues and jazz style is greatly influenced by his Balkan upbringing, his Hungarian musical education and his years touring internationally with renowned guitarist Al Di Meola. Raised in Serbia in a family of musicians who later settled in southern Hungary in 1993 during the Yugoslavian war. Csaba recorded his first blues album at the age of 16. Other new albums followed including “A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix” and “Nelkuled (Without You),” a melodic collection of vocal compositions influenced by traditional Hungarian style with a pop delivery.

The Serbian National Folk Dance Ensemble presents KOLO as it visits Chicago during its North American tour, organized by SCA Oplenac in Toronto as part of its 25th Anniversary celebration. The performance features music, dance, and traditional costumes that celebrate Serbian culture.
